MATRIZ CREATIVA

Natalia Kekelia

b. 2005, Poti, Georgia

Natalia Kekelia is a Georgian visual artist and printmaker based in Poti. She is currently completing her Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Art at Ilia State University, where her practice focuses primarily on printmaking.

Working with etching, aquatint, drypoint, mezzotint, linocut, woodcut, and monotype, her practice describes the relationship between memory, place, and everyday experience. Her works often draw from photographic archives, observations of her surroundings, and fragments of lived experience, transforming familiar scenes into atmospheric and emotionally layered images.

Growing up in the coastal city of Poti has strongly influenced her visual language. The sea, domestic spaces, family archives, and traces of local life frequently appear in her work, where documentary references become starting points for reflecting on belonging, memory, nostalgia, and the passage of time.

“Before Storm Begins”, “Lost” and “Choice”

Mezzotint series of 3 pieces

35x11 cm (11x11cm each)

2026

The storms that life always brings. In the darkness, a beam of light cuts across the water, reminding us that there is always a way out, even when things feel uncertain.

The waves carry things away, what weighs us down, like memories or burdens we can’t hold on to forever.

Finding the courage to start again.

However hard it may seem.

Every storm carries with it the possibility of a new beginning.

And just before the storm begins, there is a pause.

A quiet breath, a fragile calm.

Where choice still exists, where hope gathers its strength.

And we remember that even facing the storm is a step beyond fear.

"Hope"

Mezzotint

7X10cm

2025

Continuing when the way forward is uncertain. Moments when everything feels distant, unclear, or covered by doubt, yet something inside us keeps looking for a way through.

The work speaks about the small sense of reassurance that can appear in difficult or lonely moments. Hope is not presented as certainty or an immediate solution, but as something small that remains present even when we cannot see what comes next.

It is about holding onto that feeling-the belief that there may be something beyond the uncertainty, and allowing that belief to be enough to take another step forward.

"Night at the Gas station"

Mezzotint

7 x 10 cm

2025

The absence of people deepens a sense of solitude, as if time has paused mid-journey. The quiet interplay of shadow and light - an empty gas station, a solitary car - captures a fleeting threshold between movement and stillness.

Within this pause lies the act of letting go: the release of what has passed, the surrender to moments of emptiness, and the acceptance that life continues beyond our grasp. The familiar yet overlooked space becomes a metaphor for transition, reminding us that in order to move forward, we must sometimes leave behind.

Yet this stillness also reveals another truth - the urgency of living in the present. When the future is uncertain and the past is already gone, all that remains is the fragile, unrepeatable now.

Having left everything behind, we stand in this moment with whatever we have, unsure of what tomorrow might bring or whether it will come at all. In this suspended instant, the work invites us to inhabit the present fully, to breathe into what exists here and now, and to recognize that even in emptiness, life persists - asking us to live it today.

“On the Road” .

Etching, Aquatint

24.5 x 14 cm

2024

The feeling of leaving one place without knowing exactly what comes next. It is a quiet moment of being somewhere in between, when the past is still close but the future is not yet clear. The journey carries a feeling of loneliness, anticipation, and freedom at the same time. There is something comforting about continuing forward, even when you do not know where the road will lead. The work is about that feeling of moving on and slowly becoming separated from what was once familiar.

“The Summer Nights”,

Etching, aquatint

16 × 20 cm

2024

Summer evenings are shared with people who have become part of our everyday memories. It carries a sense of warmth, ease, and closeness - the kind of moments that seem ordinary while they are happening, but become meaningful with time.

Feeling of returning to something familiar: voices, laughter, and the comfort of being together without needing anything more from the moment. There is a quiet sense of nostalgia, not only for a particular summer, but for a period of life that can only be remembered once it has passed. The work holds onto that feeling of closeness while acknowledging how naturally moments, people, and places become part of the past.
